Sometimes called "Little Washington" the town was the first in the nation to be named for the for the founding father, George Washington. Presently, the city is rightfully known as:
"The Original Washington" named and laid out on the North Bank of the River in 1776.
Washington, originally a regional shipping center is strategically located on the Pamlico River with direct access to the Intracoastal Waterway, (ICW) connecting to the Pamlico Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and beyond.
Washington recently charted a new course and has been restored to it's original luster, enhanced by new roadways, boat docks with power, water and pump-out, wide brick walkways and new lamp posts.
Today the river is a recreational paradise with unsurpassed Water Sports, Sailboats, Cruisers, Pontoons and Fishing boats.
Warmer months bring street fairs like Music in the Streets, and the Summer Festival; the Fall event, Smoke on the Water is the annual barbecue and chili cookoff and in December Washington is host to the Christmas Flotilla with dozens of boats parading the Washington Waterfront with glowing holiday lights.
